The new 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe: What do you get for this price

Chevrolet

Overview

The Chevrolet Tahoe for 2023 offers plenty of room inside for passengers and cargo. It's large like you want it to be, but drives more agile than other large SUVs. You have the choice between three different engines, each with its own decent towing capacity. The entry-level engine is a V-8 with 355 horsepower. If you desire more power, there's also a 420-hp option available when ordering your SUV.

The Tahoe has always been a reliable mode of transportation, and the latest generation is no different. With the addition of a six-cylinder diesel inline-six, it's now more powerful than ever before. Three-row seating comes standard, so you can bring your whole family along for the ride. And even the base LS trim comes equipped with all the bells and whistles you've come to expect from a modern vehicle, like infotainment and driver-assistance features. If you're an off-road adventurer, then you'll want to check out the Z71 model. It includes a two-speed transfer case, an adjustable air suspension, and meaty all terrain tires that will make light work of any terrain imaginable.

If you're looking for a more luxurious experience, go with the pricier Premier and High Country models. However, beware that you might end up paying as much as you would for a Cadillac Escalade for just a Chevy. If Cargo space is what you need most, consider going with the even bigger Chevrolet Suburban- which we review separately.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Tahoe has always had a V-8 under the hood, and that hasn't changed for this generation. Standard is a 355-hp 5.3-liter, but there's also an available 420-hp 6.2-liter engine. However, new for this generation is a 3.0-liter diesel six-cylinder engine option that produces 460 pound feet of torque - which just so happens to match the big V=8 even though it has less horsepower.

Every Tahoe comes with a 10-speed automatic transmission and the choice of rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. We put the Z71 model, which is built for off-roading, through its paces. It has the standard V8 engine, traditional four-wheel drive via a two-speed transfer case, 20” wheels wrapped in all terrain tires, plus underbody protection to keep things safe and sound.

acceleration was good, the brakes were firm, and the cabin noise level was low at highway speeds. The Z71 package also includes air springs (that allow Tahoe's ride height to be automatically or manually lowered or raised) and adaptive dampers. These features are standard on the Premier and High Country models. Both of these models as well as the RST model have 22-inch rims for added curb appeal.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The most fuel-efficient Tahoe features the available diesel engine, which is estimated to get 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. The standard 5.3-liter V-8 is slightly more efficient in terms of gas mileage in the city than  the optional 6.2-liter V‑8, but both are rated at 20 highway mpg by the EPA standards. We put a diesel-powered Tahoe through our extensive testing regimen on our 75 mph highway route and observed an average of 27 mpg . If you want to learn more about how much fuel different models of Tahoes use, visit the EPA's website for updated numbers..

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Tahoe's interior is spacious, with plenty of room for adults to sit comfortably in the back row. Thanks to its independent rear suspension, the Tahoe also has a flat load floor that makes it easy to store cargo. With the second and third rows folded down, there is over 120 cubic feet of space available

Although we managed to fit six carry-on suitcases behind the third row, we didn't like that Chevy replaced the old column shifter with a push-button-and-slider setup. The motorized, retractable center-console lid seems gimmicky as well, especially since its control switch is located on the roof. Thankfully, though, Tahoe's other interior ergonomics aren't as bad.

What is the difference between 2022 and 2023 Tahoe?

Not much has changed for the new model year. Only the RST Performance package, new styling cues, and Super Cruise availability are new. Unfortunately, buyers looking for a vastly different full-size SUV than the 2022 Tahoe should look elsewhere.

Are new Chevy Tahoes reliable?

We expect the 2022 Tahoe will be much less reliable than the average new car. This prediction is based on data from 2021 models. Select the used car model year to see reported issues with those similar past models.

How much does the 2023 Tahoe SS cost?

What's New? The 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe is a roomy and comfortable full-size 3-row SUV with seating for up to nine. Prices start at $52,000.

Is a Yukon or a Tahoe better 2022?

After looking at the comparison between the 2022 Chevy Tahoe and 2022 GMC Yukon, the GMC Yukon edges in the victory and wins the race for best overall full-size SUV.
