2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Informative Car Review

Jeep Grand Cherokee

Overview

Let your imagination take you to the Jeep world and it's inevitable that the Wrangler will be at its heart. However, don't overlook the Grand Cherokee - this supreme off-roader is one of Jeep's most successful sales models due to its perfect synthesis of on-road civility and off-road ruggedness. With plenty of luxurious features and a classic outdoorsy aesthetic, there isn't much more anyone could ask for!

We were so impressed with the Jeep Grand Cherokee that it earned an Editors' Choice award! Offering a trio of powertrains, including V-6 and V-8 options as well as the revolutionary 4xe plug-in hybrid variant, you can tackle whatever your lifestyle requires. From snow to rocks in Moab - rear wheel drive is standard on models with a V-6 engine but also have access to three different all-wheel drive systems for added capability.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The new Grand Cherokee is driven by either a 3.6-liter V-6 or a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8, offering more power than the previous generation model did. To add to its appeal even further, Jeep now offers their groundbreaking plug-in hybrid 4xe powertrain which adds electrification to this classic family SUV! Rear wheel drive comes standard with the base V-6 whereas all wheel drive is included as default on versions powered by the V8 and plug in hybrid engine respectively - meaning no matter what your needs may be, there'll always be an option for you!

Maximize your off-roading experience with the Trailhawk model that offers an adjustable air suspension for up to 11.3 inches of ground clearance, disconnecting sway bar and exceptional wheel articulation - perfect for tackling any terrain! An electronically locking limited-slip differential is just one of several all-wheel drive systems available in this powerful vehicle.

When we took it out for a spin, the Grand Cherokee wowed us with its steady, tranquil ride. Plus, both the V-6 and V-8 engines offered plenty of power. During our test track session with the Summit – which was powered by a V-6 engine – it managed to reach 60 mph within 7.4 seconds; while Trailhawk (optimized more for offroading) completed this same task in only 7.7 seconds! Impressive performance from such strong contenders!

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Fuel economy estimates for the V-6–powered Grand Cherokee are typical of the mid-size SUV segment at 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway when paired with rear-wheel drive. Adding all-wheel drive drops each of those estimates by 1 mpg; the V-8 model is rated for 14 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. The plug-in hybrid 4xe delivers better fuel economy and is rated for 23 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. It comes with a 14.0-kWh battery pack and a 134-hp electric motor that allows the Grand Cherokee to cruise for up to 26 miles per charge. Jeep boasts that the Grand Cherokee with the 4xe powertrain completed the famed Rubicon Trail entirely in its EV driving mode. Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Driver-assistance features such as pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, and semi-autonomous driving modes are becoming increasingly important to shoppers, and Jeep is delivering a more comprehensive suite of standard safety tech to satisfy that demand.
