Replacing Rocker Panels on Automobiles: A Step-by-Step Guide

Rocker panels, which are commonly referred to as rocker sills or rockers guards, play an integral role in any automobile structure. Located along the bottom of the car's doors, they protect not only the undercarriage and frame from external damage but also safeguard passengers inside for a safe driving experience. Nonetheless, like most vehicle parts, wear and tear can contribute to their eventual deterioration over time; thus it is critical that you replace them so your car remains operational and secure at all times.

In this article, we will show you how to take the necessary steps in replacing rocker panels on automobiles and explain why it is essential for your vehicle's health.

Tools and Materials Needed

To ensure a successful replacement process, it is essential to collect the proper tools and materials. Make sure you have:

  • A jack and jack stands
  • A socket set and wrench set
  • A hammer and chisel
  • A body filler and putty knife
  • A rust converter
  • A primer and paint that matches the color of the car
  • A new set of rocker panels

Step 1: Removing the Old Rocker Panels

Replacing the rocker panels on your car is easy! First, lift and secure it with jack stands. This will provide you access to its underside. Then, identify the fasteners located at both ends of the panel that hold it in place using a socket set or wrench set. Now unscrew these so that you can remove them easily and replace them with new ones!

To detach the old rocker panel from your car, carefully unfasten all of its fasteners. Then, while proceeding cautiously and deliberately, use a hammer and chisel to gently tap it loose if it has become stuck due to rust or corrosion. Move slowly as you pry off the panel so that no damage is done in the process.

Step 2: Preparing the Surface

Before installing the new rocker panel, you must prepare the surface accordingly. Clean off any dirt and debris that has accumulated over time, then use a rust converter to treat all sites of corrosion or rust on your frame or undercarriage. This will protect it from further damage in the future. After everything is clean and treated with a rust converter, apply body filler using a putty knife to smooth out dents and other uneven areas before allowing it to dry completely for installation of your new rocker panel!

Step 3: Installing the New Rocker Panels

Now that the surface is all set, it's time to put in the new rocker panels. To begin with, line up the panel precisely with your car’s frame and make sure each of its fasteners and holes are properly organised. Then use those same earlier-removed fasteners to affix them into place tightly.

Once fixed firmly, coat your panel using a primer plus paint which coordinates exactly with your vehicle's colouring scheme; this will not only help support against rust as well as corrosion but also give it an immaculate look so that it can blend seamlessly into the rest of your automobile!

Step 4: Finishing Up

After the rocker panel is securely in place and painted, ensure that everything is sealed properly by assessing for any possible leaks or imperfections before fastening them all together. Remember, changing a car's rocker panels requires diligence and caution - it isn't an easy task!
